On the 20th July 1871 in the offices of London's 'The Sportsman', Secretary Charles Alcock Proposed a Challenge Cup be established in which all cubs belonging to the association could compete for. Three months late the proposal was accepted and so the FA Cup competition was born. A crowd of 2000 attended the very first FA Cup Final, each paying one shilling and watch Wanderers win Royal Engineers 1-0 at Kennington Oval. Since then the FA Cup Final has been a date not to be missed by millions of football fans and cup finals have come and gone with elation and devastation, but there’s one that sticks in many fans minds.

The date is 12th May 1979, the venue is Wembley Stadium and the event, the 1979 FA Cup Final. Arsenal headed by manager Terry Neill played Manchester United fronted by manager Dave Sexton. Most who watched the game life or via the television would agree the first 85 minutes of this game were unremarkable to say the least with Arsenal players Frank Stapleton and Brian Talbot scoring a goals a piece, both set up by Liam Brady, making the score 2-0 to Arsenal. With just 5 minutes to go it looked like Manchester United were going to be defeated, however, in the 86th minute Gordon McQueen stuck a bundles goal only to be followed by Sammy McIlroy scoring a breathtaking equaliser. If you weren't there or didn't watch it, you can only imagine the jubilation of the Man United fans. Unfortunately this was short-lived as Alan Sunderland romped home with a last minute winner. The final result being Arsenal 3, Manchester United 2.
