
Many fantastic music groups and solo artists have come out of Ireland, none more so that the highly successful group U2. The band was formed in 1976 when the members were just teenagers. Group members include Bono who sings the lead vocals and plays guitar, The Edge playing keyboard, guitar and singing backing vocals, Larry Mullen Jr. on drums and percussion and last but not least Adam Clayton on bass guitar. In Limerick, Ireland in 1978, U2 won a talent show bagging them £500, this money went to fund their first demo which was recorded at the Keystone Studios in Dublin. Bill Graham, a Hot Press journalist had previously introduced the band to Paul McGuiness and now agreed to become there manager.

In September 1979 U2 released there first record which was an Ireland-only EP called 'Three' and establishes chart success in Ireland. U2 signed with Island Records in March 1980 and the bands first international record '11 O'Clock Tick Tock' was released. The rest, as they say, is history. U2 have gone from strength to strength with numerous releases and selling in excess of 170 million albums worldwide. In 1988 U2's album 'The Joshua Tree' won a Grammy Award, since then, they have received a staggering 22 Grammy's in total leaving them tied top Grammy Award winner alongside Stevie Wonder.
There is no doubt that U2 have incredible talent in fact Rolling Stone Magazine have listed them as number 22 in their list of 100 all time greatest artist and in 2005 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame invited them in. Coming right up to present day, U2 have been recording and writing new songs first with Rick Rubin and recently Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno have been involved. It is there plan to release their new album in October 2008. On the 23rd January 2008 U2 released a 3D movie called 'U2 3D' which was filmed on the 'Vertigo Tour'.
