Puttin' on the Ritz with an Irving Berlin Commemorative Photo
You may not recognize the face of Irving Berlin, but you will most
definitely recognize his music. This talented song writer penned many of
the tunes that the majority of people know well enough to sing along
with - at least when the chorus begins. If you don't believe us, try
crooning a few lines of "White Christmas" or "There's no Business like
Show Business". Just hum a few bars - yeah, you remember now, don't you?
Irving Berlin was born Israel Berlin in New York City to Russian
immigrants. When Berlin was just 13 years old, his father died, leaving
Berlin to scan the streets for an assortment of jobs to help support his
family. He began working as a singer/waiter in Chinatown, and this led
to the publication of his first song, "Marie from Sunny Italy".
"Alexander's Ragtime Band" followed shortly afterwards, and a star was
officially born. Berlin wrote seventeen complete scores for Broadway
musicals and was a contributor on six additional scores. "Annie Get your
Gun" was one of the most famous scores that Berlin penned.
Irving Berlin's clever song writing abilities boosted the successful
careers of many well-known entertainers, including Bing Crosby, Ethel
Merman and Fred Astaire. His songs were heard both on Broadway and in
Hollywood, since Berlin was equally comfortable writing for the screen
as he was the stage. His first major international hit was "Alexander's
Ragtime Band" which became a sensation in 1911. Berlin continued to wow
audiences over the next five decades with offerings like "Blue Skies",
"Cheek to Cheek" and "Easter Parade". A true patriot to the core, Berlin
also has the unofficial national anthem, "God Bless America" in his
repertoire. He also contributed generously to organizations like Army
Emergency Relief and the Boy and Girl Scout Clubs.
